• Year-Round Assignment: Read Scripture App and the New City Catechism

As you work your way through missionary training, we would like for you to be reading through the Bible in a year. The app we will be using is called the Read Scripture app, and it includes incredibly helpful videos made by the Bible Project. At the end of each course, we will be asking you were you are in your Bible reading plan.

Additionally, we would like for you to go through one question per week in the New City Catechism. This is a helpful and concise way to learn the central doctrines of the Christian faith. Please feel free to review it in whatever language you are most comfortable with, a list of available languages can be found here. At the end of each course, we will also be asking you which question you are currently reviewing.

Available courses

Love and Serve is a one-week course designed to deepen your understanding and practice of our third pillar of ministry. There will be a series of interviews with our staff who are doing exemplary work in this type of ministry. In addition to these, the biblical foundations for love and serve ministry will be explored, and objections to this type of ministry will be engaged with. Trainees will learn how serving the vulnerable reflects the Messiah’s character and fosters meaningful gospel conversations.

Trainees are expected to observe and engage in experiences that they will regularly be required to perform as missionaries. These standard experiences include events, outreach, deputation, and visits.

Course summary.

Part of core training is the requirement that every trainee memorize our Christ in the Passover script.

Teaching Scripture is a two-week course where we will continue to look at inductive Bible study to learn how to pull meaning from the scripture and then work on how we prepare to present that information to others. Most of the work in this course has to do with putting together a lesson plan for your inductive Bible study of Mark 1:1-15.

Now that you have acquired the essential skills and completed specialized training, we expect you to demonstrate proficiency in conveying the word of God effectively in your ministry. This includes contextualizing the gospel to engage with your specific audiences

Studying Culture is a two-week class that aims to give you the tools you need to contextualize the gospel effectively. The first section will cover the topics of culture and theological vision. From there you will be introduced to the process of going from “learning” to “doing” through a tool called design thinking.

Studying Scripture is a two-week course that teaches the steps of basic Biblical Hermeneutics, or how to study the Bible. We use the “inductive” method, relying primarily on the text itself. We’ll be looking at and experimenting with various “tools” to aid your study. Though we want our staff to be competent at reading and studying scripture without outside help, we’ll also be looking at the best ways to use commentaries, dictionaries, and other study aids. All work will be done in the same language we expect to be teaching. The class will not address advanced exegetical methods such as studying in Biblical Hebrew or Greek.

Donor and Partner Relations is a one-week-long course. We’ll be looking at individual donor relations as well as our ministry of deputation to local churches. We will present donor and partner relations not merely as an activity that supports ministry but as ministry in and of itself. Our hope is that you begin to develop appreciation and deep respect for our donors as partners in the gospel and are inspired and equipped to build ongoing relationships with them in your ministry.

The Missionary Life is a two-week course that aims to guide you, as a new missionary, in anchoring your identity in the Messiah rather than in what you do for Him. Throughout the course, we will explore the missionary's identity, establish effective administrative systems to maintain focus, and formulate a Rule of Life to cultivate meaningful spiritual disciplines. This holistic approach will help you to stay connected with God while effectively ministering to others.
